How Sustainable Beauty impact your health and the environment?

Updated: Jan 16, 2021

Many of us have now adapted to some form of sustainable lifestyle. We ditched our plastic straws, took our cotton shopping bags to the shops, brought our coffee cup to the café, brushed our teeth with bamboo toothbrushes and flossed them with Corn Dental floss.

What about the skin care products we use on our biggest organ, morning and night? Can we be more sustainable with our skin care routine? The answer is yes, our choices of Sustainable Beauty products can make a big impact on our health and the environment.

What is sustainable beauty?

Sustainable beauty products are vegan, cruelty free and pack in sustainable and/or recyclable packaging.

Vegan ingredients are naturally derived from Fruits, Florals and/or Botanicals. These ingredients contain more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to repair, hydrate and nourish the skin. Vegan skin care does not contain ingredients sourced from animals such as beeswax, honey, collagen and lanolin.

Synthetic ingredients like paraben, sulphates, phthalates, petrochemicals, silica, mineral oils and artificial fragrances and colours are not used in sustainable beauty products.

Cruelty Free beauty products are not tested on animals and do not contain animal-derived ingredients. Sustainable beauty products are packed in eco-friendly packaging such as glass, paper and anything that's biodegradable and recyclable.

How Natural ingredients work on the skin?

Natural skin care products contain health promoting ingredients that are packed full of vitamins and antioxidants. Examples of natural ingredients are rosehip oil, aloe vera, green tea and hyaluronic acid.

Not only do such ingredients promote long term positive health outcomes, they are also beneficial for general skin health, complexion and vitality. Because the ingredients found in natural skin care products are derived from the Earth from natural sources, they work with your body to heal, flourish and thrive. Furthermore, natural ingredients do not cause skin irritation, making them ideal for sensitive skin types.

Our skin absorbs up to 60% of the products we apply to it, when applied daily and over time it’s important to make sure that our skincare isn’t made up of chemicals, toxins, synthetic ingredients.

Whilst Plants do not contain collagen like humans or animals do, they play a critical role in collagen production in our body through our diet. Diet consists of high healthy fats and vitamins (especially Vitamin C) promotes collagen production in our body. Foods that are rich in Vitamin C are Australian Indigenous Kakadu Plum, oranges, guava, kiwi, cranberry, red peppers, kale, and broccoli.

Sustainable beauty lower the negative impact on our environment

The production of synthetic fragrances and colours, BHA and BHT, Phthalate generate toxic pollutants in the production process which is harmful to aquatic organisms.

Prolong use of synthetic cosmetics can cause headaches, eye damage, acne, hormonal imbalance and premature aging. Serious cases can link to cancer, reproductive challenges, birth defects, asthmatic symptoms and skin allergies.

Natural skin care products contain none of these health damaging ingredients, and the making of sustainable beauty products has low environmental impact.

Shop local to reduce carbon footprint

Australian beauty makers have an abundance of natural resources that provide quality ingredients to formulate natural, vegan skin care products. By shopping Aussie made sustainable beauty products, you can support local businesses, and reduce carbon footprints through shorter transportation journeys between your home and your makers.

The finishing touch counts too

Last, but not least, you can go the extra miles by using sustainable skin care accessories with your skin care products. Bamboo reusable make up remover pads, Cotton buds with bamboo sticks, Konjac (plant) face sponges, Ramie (plant) body puff are all eco-friendly alternatives that help reduce waste.
